Service Learning

Introduction

The benefits of Service-learning are boundless. Service-learning gives us opportunities to bring people together, strengthen our community, learn something new, give back, promote civic responsibilities, make a difference, and gain professional experience to name a few.

Because of this, LLU and the Bachelor of Science program require 40 hours of service learning while in the program. At the start of your program, in Senior Portfolio I, you will be asked to write a proposal for Service-learning. This proposal will provide a roadmap for how you will conduct the Service-learning. After the acceptance of this proposal, you will work closely with a coach/mentor as you implement the Service-learning hours. These hours will be performed with an approved non-profit community organization. At the end of your program here at LLU, you will present a formal paper and presentation on your Service-learning. The assessment and formal presentation of your Service-learning will take place during Senior Portfolio II. After successful completion of Senior Portfolio II and graduation, your official transcripts from LLU will reflect the Service-learning designation.

Instructions

Service-learning must reflect and correspond to both LLU's Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILO's) well as the Bachelor of Science Program Learning Outcomes (PLO's).

  • It must be voluntary or unpaid work

  • It must be completed during your time in the program. Prior service will not count.

  • It should be intended for social benefit

To track your service, you will complete the following form: Service Learning Hours Documentation Form

Upon completion of your service, you will write a reflection paper and create a video to reflect upon your experience.

Reflection Paper: You will create a one-page reflection (discussion of what you did, how it affected you, and your general experience) for your service learning in your ePortfolio. This page should be creative, include pictures, media, links, and elements from your service. You will post your reflection on this page as the textual element. Your portfolio instructor will provide some examples for you to get a creative idea of what to include.

Reflection Video: Using your reflection paper, create a 5-10 minute video presentation. The video should discuss the following elements:

  • What was your service learning project?

  • What challenges did you encounter?

  • How did your service learning change your personal ideas or experiences?

Upload your paper AND video to the Service-learning portion of your digital portfolio.
